sick peter – a new game for the Molyjam 2012

April 2nd, 2012 Comments off

Well, I was feeling pretty depressed about failing my 7DRL (which *will* get released eventually), but on Thursday I heard about a new game jam that I had to take part in.  The goal was to make a game based on one of the tweets of PeterMolydeux, the fantastic parody of legendary game designer Peter Molyneux.  Best of all I had the opportunity to code this alongside fellow indie devs in London – something I’ve never done before.  Alas I had but 5 hours to actually make something, but the end result is something I’m fairly proud of:

[Edit: Problem with the site, but you can find the game here: ]

In “sick peter” you play a terminally ill four year old Jewish boy looking for his lost mother in Nazi-occupied Holland.  It’s a stealth game mostly – you have to avoid the German guards whilst also managing your depleting stamina, which gets harder as your illness creeps up on you.  It’s a roguelike insofar as it has random environments, permadeath and is turn-based, but there is no direct combat and it’s more story-focused (albeit very short).

There’s also a video of me presenting the game here (around the 8:44:00 mark):

There were a lot of other interesting games displayed that I was very impressed by, like one where you are a ghost and must influence cats using sounds in your microphone.  Ooh, and Peter Molyneux (the real one) was there himself!  Was pretty cool to be around other developers in general.  There was a lot of humour and camaraderie.  Was good fun!  I’ve done game challenges in the past, but never physically around other people.  Will have to do more of these in future  :)

Ooh, and a screenshot:

Harrowed – A RL made in zero hours whilst drunk :/

Yes, I managed it, though around the 45 minute mark I thought I was seriously going to fail. The game is a simple dungeon crawler – you get your health regenerated upon level change, and must kill/avoid the enemies chasing you. Download the windows version here:

Alternatively Mac and Linux users can download the T-Engine beta 34 and grab the module file for the game here:

This is a new game I’ve written in the T-Engine in less than a day and a half. Admittedly I ran a little out of time and didn’t get to add sound effects like I would have wanted to. There’s also a couple of minor features missing. In particular item tooltips don’t work in the inventory, and I never implemented a right-click on player command to streamline the interface.

It’s a very short and simple game, based on themes of guilt and escapism. The gameplay twist is simple – the game boss appears x turns after you’ve been on any level, but early on you don’t have the power to defeat it. The only option is to run! Until you feel powerful enough to face it, of course.

To play you can download the windows standalone version, or download beta 34 of ToME4 and drop the module folder into game/modules/.

And now for some well-deserved sleep :)

Broken Bottle 1.2 released!

June 3rd, 2011 2 comments

This is tweak release to balance a couple of gameplay elements and alter a few bits of text in the game.

Windows download here.
Mac and Linux users will have to get beta 27 of the T-Engine and extract the game’s module folder to the /game/modules/ directory of the T-Engine.

– Increased starting HP from 20 to 25
– Decreased junkie attack power and accuracy
– Added variety to player killing messages depending on enemy and drunken state
– Several small text tweaks and additions in story elements.
– Slightly decreased withdrawal rate (you’ll see hallucinations less quickly)
– Much much lower and less frequent hp penalties from heavy alcohol abuse
– Flying numbers above @ to indicate hp or stamina loss from drunk/withdrawal effects

7DRL Success: Broken Bottle

I have made a new game in 7 days!  And have updated it a little bit since as well…  I present “Broken Bottle”, a post-apocalyptic game with themes of alcoholism and brutality:

Broken Bottle gameplay screenshot

To download it you either need to download the T-Engine and put my module into the game/modules/ folder. Windows users can download this complete package.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world, following an alcoholic with a murky past as he tries to ascend to the surface. The game has a grim and dark theme, with story elements revealed through game progression, and through hallucinations or dreams induced by alcoholic abuse or withdrawal. Alcohol is a core element of the game – living without it is difficult, as it highly replenishes stamina which is used up in melee (fighting on very low stamina will make you miss most of the time). There are also withdrawal effects if you go without for a long time. On the other hand abusing alcohol too much can be bad for you, and can even send you into a immobile state.

UNSTOPPABLE is a roguelike(ish) game centred around an invincible character with an unstoppable weapon.  No enemies can harm the player, but with looping map edges there is a risk of complications when the unstoppable shots hit the impenetrable armour…

Download for Windows, Linux and Mac OSX:

It’s hard, tense and fairly fun.  I’m quite proud that I managed to make it in just 4 days.  Hope you enjoy it, and let me know if you find any nasty bugs.

Trapper: Director’s Cut

A new version of Toby the Trapper is ready! Download it here:

Currently only includes the windows exec and source. If anyone on Linux or a Mac can compile it with FPC on those platforms and send it to me I’d be most grateful. [Edit: Have Linux exec included in package now.]

There are various changes, including speed optimisation, rebalancing, more enemies and a lot of little tweaks. Enjoy!

Trapper is Finished!
